Legionella Discovered for Second Time at Police Scotland College

The discovery of Legionella bacteria at Police Scotland’s training college has brought attention to the health risks posed by contaminated water systems. This incident underscores the importance of proper maintenance and monitoring to prevent outbreaks of Legionnaires’ disease, a potentially fatal respiratory condition caused by Legionella bacteria.

The bacteria is believed to have been found in the water supply of an accommodation block on the 19th of September, with 55 staff members living on the site being moved to other accommodations. Further inspections were carried out, but the college did remain open.

There are ‘hundreds of people using the site daily’; many fear this could lead to staff becoming unwell.

The college was also forced to shut down back in 2022 after an outbreak in the water supply. Both cases were discovered after regular testing was carried out, which highlights the importance of having regular testing procedures in place.

At Safety First Group, we specialise in proactive water management strategies that keep your workplace safe from harmful bacteria. With Legionella thriving in stagnant or poorly maintained water systems, the consequences can be severe. In environments like office buildings, healthcare facilities, and educational institutions—where water usage fluctuates or where certain systems go unused—water systems can become breeding grounds for Legionella.

How Legionella Spreads

Legionella bacteria multiply in warm, stagnant water, often found in heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems, cooling towers, and unused taps or showers. When the bacteria are dispersed into the air through mist or water vapor, they can be inhaled, leading to Legionnaires’ disease. Even a small amount of water in an inadequately managed system can pose a risk, as seen in this recent case affecting Scotland’s law enforcement facilities.

Our Comprehensive Approach

Safety First Group provides tailored Legionella risk management solutions to ensure your facility is compliant with UK health and safety guidelines. Here’s how we help mitigate the risks of Legionella:
